Jaina's First Thanksgiving...

... was a rough one! The day started out as normal. About 12:30 we realized she was kind of hot, but blew it off because we had just come in from outside and our faces were cold. We noticed she acted really tired, but didn't really think a lot of it. A little while later my mom went and grabbed the thermometer to take her temperature and it was 104!!! We immediately gave her some Tylenol, stripped her down, and gave her a bath to try and get her fever down. After about 30 minutes it was down to 102, but she was still very lethargic. I got in touch with the pediatrician. He said her fever could be up to 108 and not to worry about the fever, but the other symptoms. He said we should use Motrin instead of Tylenol and to use the dosage for a 2 year old since she's over 6 months.

Then she started projectile vomiting all over the place. We eventually got her feeling better and her fever down to around 100. By the time we got back to Conway her fever was going back up, so I gave her some Motrin and waited a little while to see what was going to happen. She wouldn't keep any medicine or Pedia-lyte down and her fever kept creeping up so we decided (at 103) to go ahead and make the trip to the ER. Better safe than sorry, right?

When we got to the ER, her fever had gone back town to 101 and she (of course) was laughing and playing and giggling and acting like nothing was wrong. They tested for flu and strep (both negative) and did a blood draw to check her white blood count (also normal). Watching them draw blood from Jaina's arm and having to help hold her down was probably the worst thing I've ever been through with that child. So they basically told us it was probably a virus and to follow up with the pediatrician today.

As it turns out, she has Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. I've never heard of it but apparently it's not that uncommon. It can cause fever up to 105. She has 4 or 5 little blisters in the back of her mouth and throat that the ER doctor either missed or she developed them during the night. We're supposed to mix equal parts Benadryl and Maalox and give that to her to coat her mouth/throat and keep her hydrated. Thankfully she's able to keep down a bottle now. She is much better and her fever seems to be staying down, but she's still a sick little baby! :(

Poor baby! I'd never heard of it when Ben got it, either. He got that, Roseola, and a couple of other things one right after the other for 2 months straight when he was 11-12 mos. Crazy! Glad all's well now. See ya' at xmas!
